This is a word cloud from wordle on the five awesome things about 1 Henry VI according to the American Shakespeare Center's new email. Sign up for it at ascstaunton.com.
I enjoyed the enthusiasm behind this list of things that make Henry VI, Part 1 worth paying attention to. It also made me think about how much presentation can influence the way we experience Shakespeare. Typography seems especially important with older plays because the font, spacing, and layout can either make the text feel inviting or make it seem more distant and difficult to approach. I’ve been interested in experimenting with different lettering styles through Fontes Diferentes, and it’s interesting to imagine how a different typeface could give the same Shakespearean passage a completely different atmosphere. The words may be centuries old, but the way we visually present them can make them feel much more immediate.
